SANRAL Internships (X3)

SANRAL is inviting South African graduates to apply for its Engineering Internships (X3) within the Research & Innovation and Asset Management departments. Successful applicants will be responsible for supporting engineering projects, assisting with data collection and analysis, participating in research initiatives, and contributing to SANRAL’s ongoing asset management and road safety programs. These internships are aimed at helping graduates gain workplace exposure and hands-on training in a professional engineering environment.

These internships are designed to provide graduates with practical experience, exposure to real engineering projects, and knowledge of SANRAL’s asset management, research, innovation, and road safety functions.
The purpose of the programme is to offer work-integrated learning to empower young professionals entering the engineering field.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Research and Innovation Internship
    NQF 7 in Public Administration & Management.
  2. Asset Management Internships (X2)
    NQF 6 or above in Civil Engineering.

Internship Duties and Exposure

1.Asset Management Internship Duties
Under the supervision of a Project Manager and Road Network Manager, interns will gain exposure
to:

  • Traffic Monitoring & Structures
  • Introduction to TMH3 Traffic Monitoring Specifications
  • Understanding TMH14 Traffic Monitoring Data Formats
  • Assistance with tender preparation
  • Updating the Traffic Monitoring Database
  • Loading Traffic Monitoring Station Information
  • Introduction to TMH19 Visual Assessment of Structures
  • Updating the Structures Database
  • Allocating structure numbers
  • Performing traffic and structure data quality assurance

Research and Innovation Internship Duties
Under the supervision of the Research, Innovation & Road Safety Education Manager, the intern will
be exposed to:

  • Project Management & Research Administration
  • Coordinating workshops to identify and prioritise research needs
  • Ensuring peer reviews of project proposals
  • Managing quarterly research progress meetings
  • Overseeing administrative and contract management tasks
  • Managing research project budgets
  • Reviewing and accepting project milestones
  • Uploading data into ITIS Research Module
  • Preparing research impact reports
  • Supporting presentations of research results at seminars
  • Mentorship coordination for Master’s and PhD students
  • Monitoring research team performance
  • Coordinating researcher panel updates
